Large Fowl
Pima County 4-H Poultry Project proudly encourages our exhibitors to explore large fowl chickens! With so many breeds to choose from, these birds have a rich history throughout the world.
Large fowl, also known as standard chickens, are full-sized birds recognized by the American Poultry Association (APA). These birds are generally bigger, heavier, and bred for specific purposes such as egg production, meat, or ornamental use. In contrast to bantams, which are smaller and often easier to handle, large fowl require more space, feed, and sometimes a bit more experience to manage—though they’re equally valuable and impressive in the show ring.
Click the link below to visit the American Poultry Association (APA) website. We recommend purchasing the APA Standard of Perfection, which is the official guide for all recognized poultry breeds. During poultry showmanship, exhibitors may be asked about a wide range of topics including breed characteristics, defects, disqualifications (DQs), and more—all covered in the standard book.
Be sure to check the APA’s list of recognized breeds and varieties to help guide your project selection.
