Showmanship
Showmanship is a special class where the exhibitor—not just the bird—is evaluated. Judges look at how well you handle your bird, your knowledge about its care, and your ability to present it confidently. Showmanship is a chance to demonstrate responsibility, understanding of your project, and poise in the show ring. It’s required for all exhibitors, whether you’re showing commercial birds, ornamental breeds, or waterfowl.
Preparing for Showmanship
Know your bird: Breed, age, diet, and care. Judges may ask questions about your daily care routines.
Practice handling: Hold, position, and move your bird confidently and gently.
Appearance matters: Birds should be clean, well-groomed, and ready for the show; exhibitors should dress neatly.
Be confident and polite: Speak clearly, answer questions honestly, and stay calm.
Showmanship Classes
Classes are divided by experience and age. Novice classes are for exhibitors in their first year. Junior classes are for ages 8–11, intermediate classes are for ages 12–14, and senior classes are for ages 15–18.
Tips for Success
Bring all necessary equipment (cages, feed, water).
Arrive early so you and your bird can settle before judging.
Practice at home or attend mock sessions if possible.
Remember: judges evaluate you as much as your bird—knowledge, attitude, and personal appearance are all important.
