Poultry Project Overview

The Pima County Poultry Project gives exhibitors the opportunity to learn responsibility, animal care, and showmanship through raising and exhibiting poultry. Whether you are new to poultry or building on experience, this project focuses on proper care, preparation, and participation throughout the year.

Birds & Care

Exhibitors are responsible for raising and caring for their birds throughout the project. Birds may come from breeders, hatcheries, or local sources, but they must meet fair requirements for ownership and age.

Daily care—including feeding, clean housing, and monitoring health—is an essential part of the project. Starting with healthy birds and maintaining consistent care will set you up for success both at home and at the fair.

Some commercial poultry projects are run directly through the county. Be sure to check calendar for any additional registration steps, deadlines, or requirements specific to those projects.

Requirements & Expectations

To participate at the fair, exhibitors must complete all project requirements. These include:

  • Meeting ownership deadlines

  • Attending clinics or project meetings

  • Completing required certifications

  • Staying up to date with project information

Requirements dates may vary slightly each year, so it is important to regularly check current guidelines, announcements, and the premium book. Staying involved throughout the project year helps avoid last-minute issues.

Fair & Showing

For many exhibitors, the fair is the highlight of the project—but it is just one part of the overall experience. At fair, exhibitors will:

  • Check in their birds

  • Complete a vet check

  • Participate in showmanship and breed judging

Showmanship evaluates the exhibitor’s knowledge and handling skills, while breed classes evaluate the quality of the bird. Being prepared, organized, and on time helps everything run smoothly.

Additional Opportunities

Exhibitors who want to expand their knowledge are encouraged to explore organizations like the American Poultry Association and the American Bantam Association. These organizations provide breed standards and educational resources that can help improve both bird quality and showmanship knowledge.
